Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common problem that affects the large intestine (colon) and can cause bloating, abdominal pain and cramping and changes in bowel habits. Some patients suffer with constipation while others have diarrhea. Some alternate between the two. Although IBS is uncomfortable, it does not harm the colon. Don’t confuse IBS with IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease, which can be a more serious medical concern.

The exact cause of IBS is unknown. Most people can control symptoms with changes in diet, medicine and stress management. Symptoms of IBS may include:

  • Abdominal pain, cramping or uncomfortable bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Mucus in the stool
  • Flatulence

There is no cure for IBS, so our goal is to manage your symptoms. We typically start by controlling your diet – certain foods trigger IBS symptoms. Common food triggers include alcohol, chocolate, carbonated beverages, certain fruits and vegetables and milk. Keeping a food journal and recording foods that cause constipation or diarrhea can be helpful. Taking fiber supplements can help control constipation and diarrhea.

Stress management is also important. Like many other diseases and conditions, stress can make IBS worse. Planning ahead, making lists, meditating, taking time to relax and avoiding stressful situations can prevent further aggravation of your symptoms. For some people with diarrhea, we may recommend anti-diarrheal medications. Patients with painful gastrointestinal spasms may benefit from anticholinergic medications, as well.
